In Taranto children get sick more often than in the other cities of Puglia. In the last year doctor Valerio Cecinati is in charge of the only pediatric oncology department to give  them the right to have medical care in their own city. This department was financed entirely with private money and a contribution from the Apulian Local Health Authority. Prior to this department being open, children in Taranto had to migrate in other Italian cities. In the most severe cases this is still happening.
